Antimicrobial Susceptibility - Bacteremic Staphylococcal Infections with Strains Having Elevated Glycopeptide (vancomycin) Mic Values
ثبت نشده
چکیده
This specimen was presented as a blood culture (bacteremia) isolate and was to be identified and tested for antimicrobial susceptibility. The culture contained a Staphylococcus epidermidis, a common isolate from blood cultures, some being considered skin contaminates. High rates of methicillin resistance are observed in coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) such as S. epidermidis, thus requiring therapy with alternative agents such as vancomycin. This strain was selected to highlight the importance of accurate assessment of vancomycin activity, especially those strains at the extreme (MIC, 4 μg/ml) of the wildtype MIC distribution.

High prevalence of isolates with reduced glycopeptide susceptibility in persistent or recurrent bloodstream infections due to methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.
Reduced susceptibility to glycopeptides in methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) clinical isolates is considered a risk factor for failure of glycopeptide therapy. We compared the prevalences of MRSA isolates with reduced glycopeptide susceptibility in patients with versus without persistent or recurrent MRSA bloodstream infections. A retrospective cohort study at the University Ho...

Twelve clinical strains of Staphylococcus haemolyticus (eight methicillin resistant and three methicillin susceptible), isolated from blood cultures between 1982 and 1997, were investigated for teicoplanin and vancomycin susceptibility profiles. On the basis of conventional MIC tests and breakpoints, four isolates were susceptible (MICs, 1 to 8 microgram/ml) and eight were resistant (MICs, 32 t...
متن کاملAntimicrobial resistance of enterococcal blood isolates at a pediatric care hospital in India.
Enterococci are one of the leading causes of nosocomial infections. In recent years, enterococci have become increasingly resistant to a wide range of antimicrobial agents. From April to October 2001, a study was conducted to speciate and determine the antimicrobial susceptibility of 50 isolates of enterococci from bacteremic children. These isolates were tested for antimicrobial susceptibility...
متن کاملVancomycin-gentamicin synergism revisited: effect of gentamicin susceptibility of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.
Vancomycin monotherapy of deep-seated staphylococcal infection may be associated with poor bacteriological response. We evaluated 24 unique patient isolates of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) for vancomycin-gentamicin synergism by determining time-kill curves for vancomycin at 10 micrograms/ml and gentamicin at 1 microgram/ml. Nine MRSA strains showed high-level gentamicin re...
متن کاملIn vitro activity of vancomycin and teicoplanin against coagulase negative staphylococci.
OBJECTIVES With the increase in nosocomial infections caused by coagulase negative staphylococci (CNS), laboratory diagnosis of CNS with reduced susceptibility to glycopeptides (vancomycin and teicoplanin) has become important. This study was designed to determine the glycopeptide susceptibility of clinical isolates of methicillin resistant coagulase negative staphylococci (MRCNS) at the depart...
